Ah, the perks of having graduated and finally having some semblance of free time.
I finally got to introduce Marvel to the animé club f(r)iends. They're having a blast with it so far. Well, as far as introducing something new to newbies goes. Some said they've seen the eye-popping stuff in arcade challenges. That, and the roster picqued their interest. Sadly, I couldn't replicate some of the fancier stuff for them. But I am trying my hardest to show them the basics.
Man. Fuck whoever said this shit is easy to teach. Or that it's strictly "just mash" on low level. This shit is rocket science to brand-spanking-new folks. To beginners. Never mind that it's the shoddy PS2 version, but there's no DC or XB in sight, and the arcade that had it here is gone. It'll have to do.
It's not Evo for sure, but we aren't trying to be. It's just something to put into rotation aside from Tekken or the Narutimate Hero games that they usually play. Doing something like this, especially with one of my favorite (if not my favorite) games, was always a dream of mine.
--- Oh and:
girl: Fight games like this confuse me! Right now, I'd rather play an RPG! me: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/dyango/Macros/I_SAY_SIR.jpg |

| FRENCH TV INTERVIEWS SUEHIRO MARUO & TADANORI YOKOO |
[May. 14th, 2008|08:06 am] |

http://samehat.blogspot.com/2008/05/french-tv-interviews-suehiro-maruo.html From commenter magwea, I'm happy to present this superb little video: "Unofficial godfather of Same Hat Suehiro Maruo interviewed on French television and uploaded for your viewing pleasure."
In addition to a short interview with Uncle Maruo and footage from the Midori anime adaptation (and revealing footage of his studio and some sketches and uninked pages), the clip also features one of my all-time favorite artists, Tadanori Yokoo! Dude may rival Umezu in terms of old but productive scampy genius, and Yokoo's still producing really interesting paintings and work to this day. Oh yeah, and there is also an interview with Yoshitaka Amano, if he is more your thing. ENJOY!
Thanks again, magwea!

| [ | I MASTURBATE TO |
| | Burnt--Del the Funky Homo Sapien | ] | I was listening to an interview with Andrea Romano (The talented lady responsible for the voice direction behind the DCAU, Boondocks, Avatar, and so on) the other day and it got me thinking about what other direct-to-video DC "movie" projects I'd be interested in. So far the track record has been a bit uneven; Superman VS Doomsday was boring if not terrible, and New Frontier put forth a strong showing but lacked a bit of zazz. Gotham Knight looks to be hot (Although it doesn't really fit in with the other projects), and they're also doing an animated version of the Judas Contract story in Teen Titans (don't ask me why...)
What would IIIII like to see?
-Dark Knight Returns. This one is a bit obvious, isn't it? Say what you will about Miller doing various deranged trips with these types of stories since then, the original stands as one of the most rad Batman stories ever and would make for an excellent animated movie.
-Green Lantern Trilogy: This might be a bit over-ambitious, but a movie showing Hal's descent into insanity+Kyle's rise to prominance, The Rebirth of the GL Corps and Hal's redemption, and concluding with the Sinestro Corps war would be RAD AS HELL. Granted, ideally there'd be room for a fourth expansion that would cover the Darkest Night but no sense pinning hopes on stories that hasn't even been finished yet
-Something with Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle. He is the best new superhero in a while (Screw you, Invincible) and deserves something awesome before some talentless hack writer destroys him...forever.
-Something with Cassandra Cain Batgirl. Same thing applies from BB only she's already been dang-near destroyed.
-Red Son, but only if it's done all artsy fartsy with limited color palettes and not just a regular "straightforward" adaption like New Frontier. I want the whole thing to look like an animated Soviet-era propaganda poster.
-A comedic stand-alone flick featuring the Giffen-Demattis Justice League a.k.a. the Super Buddies. Remember: Batman makes anything funnier.
-What's So Funny About Truth, Justice and the American Way? Something where Superman stands up to cartoonishly overpowered embodiments of cynicism and "IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD, KIDDIES"-type superheroics. It's pretty much the only Superman story I genuinely like 100%, so y'know, throw that in there. -And to coincide with that last one, an Authority movie. Come on you know you want to see cartoon Midnighter. He's the best gay Batman ever! |

| Mario's the happiest sumbitch ever |
[May. 14th, 2008|07:50 am] |
Seriously, I am playing GALAXY now and he just won't stop with the happy. It's too bad they took out the "ha-HA" he used to say in Mario 64 when you land in place after a successful triple-jump. Still has the animation and everything.
Anyway, I'm really enjoying the game so far, but I think I would be fucking up less at it if I played it 10 years ago. Some of these levels are HARD for us older guys :o |

| Speed Racer! |
[May. 14th, 2008|02:13 am] |
XD While everyone ELSE is going to see Iron Man, leave it to me to go and see Speed Racer instead! XD
Really this is the first time in a LONG while that there have been THREE movies I've wanted to see (Iron Man, Speed Racer, and The Forbidden Kingdom). We wound up going to see the least promising of the three, yet it turned out great.
Yeah, you heard me, Speed Racer is, for the most part, good.
Lemme get the bad out of the way. There are a grand total of three things wrong with this movie: ( Read more... )
Those were the flaws. Needless to say, that's not too bad. Beyond that, the film was surprisingly close to it's source material, fun to watch, and of good quality.
What praticularly got me was the Mario Kart-isms in it! XD No, seriously. Speed's car actually had the appropriately colored sparks while drifting (and in retrospect, I think I caught him snaking in the opening scene! XD) but more than that...
"He's litterally racing his brother's ghost" -Race Commentator
XD More litteral that you know! Yes, after Speed flies past all the cars in the opening race, we see him racing against his brother's course ghost. It's never made clear if this is actually a hologram or merely a part of Speed's imagination, but the end result is awesome. Not only does it look JUST LIKE racing a course ghost in Mario Kart, but there's actually a certain emotional impact to it. Especially the part where Speed makes sure he has a good lead and brakes just enough to let his brother's "ghost" win and keep the top course time to honor his memory.
The movie starts alittle shakey and Spritle can be (appropriately) annoying, but this is undeniably a Speed Racer movie despite taking place on F-Zero tracks and the sheer amount of things they got RIGHT was surprising.
The characters look SPOT-THE FUCK-ON, ESPECIALLY Racer X who even SOUNDS exactly like his anime counterpart. The plot was clearly taken from a couple specific epiodes I remember (right down to the "dangerous cross-country race" and getting the buzz saws to deal with it's praticularly lawless nature (though I think that was a different lawless race) and having Trixie spot for him from a Helicopter) and thus stayed close to the anime despite tweaking things to work in a movie format.
EDIT: To say nothing of the fact that there's a certain joy in hearing Pops say "Inspector Detector..." in COMPLETE seriousness. The scene was dead serious, took it's self completely seriously, everything. There was a certain beauty to that.
The races are praticularly interesting as many of them are so trippy and over-the-top they might as well be directed by Jeff Minter!
Overall though I definately enjoyed the film, it was respectful to it's source material as best I can tell, and was generally good stuff despite afew hiccups. I look forward to the DVD release if nothing else than so I can find out what was with those weird Balls-O-Crash! SOMEONE BETTER EXPLAIN THOSE FUCKING THINGS BECAUSE THEY WERE FUCKING WEIRD!
Also, interestingly, it seems the game got good reviews despite being Wii and DS only. Guess I'll have to give it a spin once I get back from ACen. ^_^
...and speaking of games...I REALLY NEED A HOME PORT OF THIS: http://emustatus.rainemu.com/games/speedracer.htm I played it in the arcades once. It was awesome. You could play as the Car Acrobatics Team. It's probably the best Speed Racer game ever made.
In other news, at said movie, I saw a preview for the most inadvertantly funny thing ever: Star Wars: Fuck It! We use so much CG we might as well not even BOTHER with real actors!
Yup. They're making an all CG Star Wars film based on the Clone Wars cartoon. This would normally be cool except...I dunno. It rubs me the wrong way. The CG looks worse than the actual Star Wars films since it doesn't have to blend with live actors and the fact that they're making it all CG completely takes away something and...just...
...I think my brain just has a hard time comprehending it. It's only processing as "Star Wars: Half-Assed". I *LIKED* the Clone Wars cartoon too! It was fuck awesome! I bought the DVDs! Sure I thought the art looked horrible, but it was actually such a good show I could tolerate the fact that it has the same art as Hercules & Xena (at least it looked better than that visual vomit)!
But this? I dunno...maybe I just feel sorry for the movie critics who miss the good old days of non-gratuitous CG and who probably skipped Aliens VS Predator: We're Sorry. Yes, Requiem used little to no CG and was vastly surperior to the comically bad first movie! XD (Who's best moments were "Bullet-Time Face Hugger" and the fact that an Alien kicked TWO Predator asses. Anyone who COMPLAINS about that needs to shut up. They were inexperienced Preds and Xenomorphs aren't just fucking jobber enemies!)
So there you go. I leave for ACen on Thursday! WOO! |

( In case you don't know what's happening at all, the creator of Resident Evil is coming out with this new game on Wii called MadWorld and uh...it's about running around with a chainsaw on a Sin City type of atmosphere. I know this is too much hype for something revealed so early, but it's just that it feels as though my prayers were answered after completing No More Heroes: More like this, goddammit! ) |
